Today we present another article in our series of reviews of products related to water quality. The products we will be talking about today are sediment water filters and softeners. In order to understand what sediment water softeners are useful for, it is beneficial to first understand how they work. Almost all sediment water filters with cartridge style design work in the same way. Basically, water flows through the wall of the filter, and this wall acts as a sieve, keeping bigger particles from getting through. Backwashing sediment filters operate in a similar way, so the main difference is not in the operating principle but in the process of disposal of the particles trapped by the water filter. With cartridge-based filters, the cartridge simply fills up over time and once it reaches maximum capacity it has to be replaced. Backwash filters, on the other hand, have a backwash function which means that the direction of water flow is reversed such that it goes against the filter wall/sieve so that it can collect all the trapped particles and flush them away. As you can imagine, cartridge-based filters are simpler to install than backwashing ones, where you also need to have a system for the discarding of the trapped sediment.

In this article, you have the opportunity to read about three different sediment water filters made by Culligan which act as water softeners as well through their filtrating function. All of the units in our Culligan water softener reviews are cartridge-based. All of them cost less than $100! There are many other similarities between them too, but there are also many differences. To find out all the details, please read the reviews sections below.

Culligan HD-950A 1-Inch Outlet/Inlet Heavy Duty Sediment Water Filter Housing

Culligan HD-950A

Culligan HD-950A

The first one of our Culligan water softener reviews is about the Culligan HD-950A 1-Inch Outlet/Inlet Heavy Duty Sediment Water Filter Housing.

It is a water softener and filter which can successfully remove fine particles, rust, scale and dirt from water.

This particular unit has a large filtration capacity and thus it is intended for filtering large volumes of water. It can be used as a whole water filtration system for a large home, a farm, a home with a pool, a spa, a home with a private well etc.

You will feel the effects from filtration in all water-using appliances you have – including the water heater, laundry machine and dishwashing machine as well as in your plumbing and your faucets and sinks.

The price of this product is about $75, though you can probably get it for $10-$15 less on discount. One thing we must note is that a cartridge is not actually included in the product. This is just the price of the housing for the cartridge, but it is obviously not the total price of filtration since you will need to purchase replacement cartridges as well. There are several types of cartridges which work with this unit, and their prices vary from $20-$40 per piece.

The product dimensions, which will surely be important for you in terms of whether you can fit it in place conveniently or not, are 7.5 x 7.5 x 14 inches. Thus, even though the unit is twice as powerful as conventional 10 inch filters, it is still not obtrusive – it is rather compact. Its weight is about 5 pounds. You should know that a wall mount is not included in the package either, but is available for purchase. Culligan also make metal brackets for mounting it, which cost about $15. A filter housing wrench is included in the package, though.

In any case, handling the size and weight of the Culligan HD-950A 1-Inch Outlet/Inlet Heavy Duty Sediment Water Filter Housing during the installation process is certainly not problematic, but the installation itself can be challenging if you do not have any previous experience with plumbing fixtures. It is very easy to make a mistake in assembling all the parts correctly, and some parts are quite fragile so you might end up with a worthless unit from the start. So, be careful during the installation.

However, we found that once the installation was complete, the unit did work as advertised, meaning that is successfully eliminated sand and similar sediment from all the water systems we tried it on. Thus, we would certainly recommend this product. Even though there are recurring replacement charges for some parts, we’d say the cost is worth the effects of the water filtration, especially taking into account this unit’s capacity for large water volumes.

Culligan HF-360A Whole House Sediment Filter Clear Housing with 5 Micron Poly Spun Sediment Filter Cartridge

Culligan HF-360A

Culligan HF-360A

The second of our Culligan water softener reviews is about the Culligan HF-360A Whole House Sediment Filter Clear Housing with 5 Micron Poly Spun Sediment Filter Cartridge. This water softening and filtrating unit can remove dirt, sand, silt, rust and scale from water.

Similar to the other Culligan unit, this one also extends the life of the appliances that come in contact with water on a regular basis. Unlike the other one, this one has one extra feature that makes it more convenient to use – it has a patented shutoff valve that enables hassle-free cartridge replacements.

You can just use the valve to quickly turn off the water supply, then change the cartridge and switch the system back on. For this reason, and also due to its design, it is rather easy to change cartridges, especially comparing to other sediment water filters we’ve tried.

Still, this one also shares one inconvenience with the Culligan HD-950A 1-Inch Outlet/Inlet Heavy Duty Sediment Water Filter Housing we previously reviewed – with both units it is not possible to check when it is time to change the cartridge short of taking the cartridge out and looking inside to see what is going on. This is certainly not efficient, and most users solve this issue by approximating how long a cartridge is supposed to last. This means checking the sediment build up maybe once a month since you start using the product, then getting a feel for how quickly it builds up and how many months it takes until you feel like a change is in order.

The dimensions of the Culligan Whole House Sediment Filter Clear Housing with 5 Micron Poly Spun Sediment Filter Cartridge are somewhat similar to those of the Culligan HD-950A 1-Inch Outlet/Inlet Heavy Duty Sediment Water Filter Housing we previously discussed – 6 x 6 x 14 inches. Still, this unit is obviously smaller, so if you have a smaller space to work with, you should definitely take it into consideration. This one is lighter too, including the cartridge – only 3.6 pounds.

In terms of price, this unit is actually cheaper even though it includes one cartridge in the package. The listing price is about $45. It accepts most of the standard water filter cartridges, so in that sense you have a lot of variety to choose from. Also important is that this unit comes with a 5-year warranty from Culligan.

Installation, again, is not so easy. You would definitely need a plumber if you are not familiar with soldering techniques, since to install the unit you do need to solder on two threaded ends that go in and out of the unit. Some other reviews also mentioned having trouble with leaking, but since we did have a plumber assisting the installment we did not have such issues.

Culligan HF-150A 3/4 Inch Whole House Sediment Water Filter

Culligan HF-150A

Culligan HF-150A

The last one of these Culligan water softener reviews is of the Culligan HF-150A 3/4-Inch Whole House Sediment Water Filter.

This system is similar to the other two in many respects, including the type of sediment it can eliminate – which is also dirt, sand, silt, rust and scale.

It is the cheapest unit among the three with a listing price of about $20. It is also the smallest one, with dimensions of 13.2 x 5.5 x 5.5 inches and weight of 2.7 pounds. It comes with a 5-year limited warranty just like the Culligan HF-360A Whole House Sediment Filter Clear Housing with 5 Micron Poly Spun Sediment Filter Cartridge.

There are also a lot of other similarities with both other units in terms of its filtering effects – it can remove dirt, sand scale and slit just as efficiently. However, its water volume capacity is smaller, which is to be expected given its size.

A filtration cartridge is not included in the package as in the case of the Culligan HD-950A 1-Inch Outlet/Inlet Heavy Duty Sediment Water Filter Housing. What is included is the housing part, a 3/4 inch FIP outlet and inlet and installation instructions. Due to the fact that the 3/4 outlet and inlet fit the main cold water line, we’d say the installation of this unit is somewhat easier than that of the other two, where you might need to use some PVC adapters.

With that we shall conclude these Culligan water softener reviews – as always, we hope they help you make an informed purchasing decision and that you are happy with your new sediment water filter!
